CHAPTER 4 Temporomandibular Joint


Limited imaging of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may be done using a dental radiograph machine and dental film or digital sensor. Skull radiographs and computed tomography images provide more information and may be necessary in many patients to adequately evaluate the TMJs. The radiographs in this section were all done using an extraoral technique with a digital sensor and dental radiograph machine.

1. Angular process of mandible (os mandibulae, processus angularis)

2. Coronoid process of the mandible (os mandibulae, processus coronoideus)

3. Head of the condylar process of the mandible (os mandibulae, processus condylaris, caput mandibulae)

4. Neck of the condylar process of the mandible (os mandibulae, processus condylaris, collum mandibulae)

5. Mandibular fossa of temporal bone (os temporal, fossa mandibularis)

6. Retroarticular process of temporal bone (os temporal, processus retroarticulatis)

7. Tympanic bulla (bulla tympanica)

8. Zygomatic process of temporal bone (os temporal, processus zygomaticus)

9. Zygomatic bone (os zygomaticum)
