Definition


Congenital lateral deviation of the nasal bones, the maxilla or premaxilla (incisive bones), and the nasal septum with associated unilateral shortening of the affected bones or cartilage

Epidemiology



Species, Age, Sex


Equine: Congenital; no known sex predisposition



Genetics and Breed Predisposition


May occur in all breeds; the incidence seems to be higher in Arabians, which has led to so far unproven speculation that there may be a genetic component to this malformation in this breed. No cases of inherited campylorrhinus lateralis have been reported in the literature.

Associated Conditions and Disorders




• Palatoschisis (cleft palate)


• Torticollis



Clinical Presentation



History, Chief Complaint




• Lateral nasal deviation (≤90 degrees) with associated incisor occlusion deficiency and possibly protrusion of the tongue. The deformity may cause problems nursing or grazing.


• Depending on the degree of nasal septum deviation, the respiratory symptoms may vary from exercise intolerance to respiratory stridor at rest.



Physical Exam Findings




• Lateral nasal deviation


• Incisor malocclusion


• Reduced airflow from one or both nostrils


• Malodorous breath because of food retention at the concave angle of the premaxilla or maxilla


• Respiratory stridor


• Exercise intolerance


• Frequently with associated abnormal concavity of the nasal bones and hard palate rostral to the cheek teeth



Etiology and Pathophysiology




• Fetal malpositioning in utero


• Caudal or transverse presentation of fetus


• Bicornuate gestation
