Wound Dressing
Basic Information
Overview and Goal(s)
• >300 wound dressings available, ranging from passive adherent/nonadherent to interactive and bioactive products that contribute to healing
• Most newer dressings are designed to favor “moist wound healing,” which allows wound fluids and mediators to remain in contact with the wound therefore promoting “autolytic debridement” and subsequently accelerating wound healing.
• No single material can produce the optimal microenvironment for all wounds or for all the stages of the healing process.
• Wound dressings are broadly classified as either adherent or nonadherent and as absorbent or nonabsorbent.
Adherent dressings are frequently made from gauze, and are mostly passive. Gauze dressings are highly absorbent and are used for heavily contaminated, exudative wounds.
