Vaginal Hemorrhage Basic Information Definition Bloody vaginal discharge seen during pregnancy, most often caused by ulceration of vaginal varicose veins Synonym(s) Blood spotting Epidemiology Species, Age, Sex • Incidence is higher in old multiparous mares • Occurs in the last trimester of gestation Risk Factors Large varicose vestibulovaginal veins Clinical Presentation History, Chief Complaint • Large blood clots are usually present in the stall when the mare lies down or after micturition. • Dried blood is seen on the perineum, tail hairs, and hindlimbs.
