The negative logarithm of urine hydrogen ion concentration



Synonym(s)




• Aciduria (urine pH <7.0)


• Alkalinuria (urine pH >7.0)



Typical Normal Range (US Units; SI Units)


The majority of horses will have pH values equal to or greater than 7.0, and typically range from 7.5 to 8.5.



Physiology


Renal and extrarenal factors affect urine pH, including diet. Herbivores typically have alkaline urine unless they are consuming a milk diet.



Causes of Abnormally High Levels


Alkalinuria is expected in healthy herbivores.



Causes of Abnormally Low Levels




• Aciduria is expected in herbivores on a milk diet.


• Acidosis (metabolic and less commonly respiratory) may cause urinary excretion of excess acid.


• Paradoxical aciduria associated with hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis


• Hypokalemia (hydrogen ion excretion in exchange for K+ resorption in the distal tubules)


• Loop diuretic treatment (furosemide)


• Proximal renal tubular acidosis (if bicarbonate is depleted)


• Hydrogen production by some bacteria
