Urine Crystals Basic Information Definition Precipitation of salts forming crystals in the urine. Synonym(s) Crystalluria Typical Normal Range (US Units; SI Units) • Reported as the number of crystals seen per low-power field (10×) with specific identification. • Urine in healthy equine patients may contain marked numbers of calcium carbonate crystals. Low numbers of other crystals may also be seen. Physiology Salts resulting from normal and abnormal metabolic processes and some medications may precipitate in urine and form crystals if the concentration of the salts is sufficiently high and the urine is of appropriate pH. Some salts precipitate in an alkaline pH, while others precipitate in an acidic pH. Most crystals can be found in healthy animals. Due to the alkaline pH and high concentration of calcium and carbonate in equine urine, calcium carbonate crystals are frequently seen. Causes of Abnormally High Levels • Abnormal or increased metabolic products • High calcium diets (alfalfa) may favor the precipitation of calcium carbonate and calcium oxalate crystals. Next Diagnostic Step to Consider if Levels High Assess the diet and current medications.< div class='tao-gold-member'> Only gold members can continue reading.
