1. How common are renal tumors in the dog?
• Primary renal tumors are uncommon and account for less than 2% of all canine cancers.

• Metastatic renal tumors are more common.

2. What are the most common renal tumors in the dog?
• Most renal tumors are malignant

• Carcinoma or adenocarcinoma are most common

• Renal fibrosarcomas, hemangiosarcomas, and undifferentiated sarcomas are also reported

• Bilateral and multiple renal cystadenocarcinomas have been associated with a syndrome of generalized nodular dermatofibrosis described primarily in German Shepherds

• Nephroblastomas may occur in young, middle-age, or older animals

• Metastatic neoplasms

3. What signs are present with renal tumors?
• Usually nonspecific

• Includes weight loss, anorexia, lethargy

• Less commonly abdominal distention, lameness, and pain

• Unilaterally or bilaterally enlarged kidneys

• Hypertrophic osteopathy, a palpable thickening, and warmth in distal long bones may be found

• Pulmonary metastases

• Anemia or polycythemia may be secondary to decreased or increased erythropoietin production

• Neutrophilic leukocytosis may be associated with renal adenocarcinoma

4. What tests should I perform to make a diagnosis of a renal tumor?
• Biopsy will give definitive diagnosis

• Ultrasound may be useful in identifying renal tumors and guide biopsy

5. What is the prognosis for renal tumors?
• Poor if metastatic disease present
