Urinary catheters can be placed to collect a sterile urine sample or to drain or lavage the bladder.
Possible Complications and Common Errors to be Avoided
• Breaks in aseptic technique or improper sterilization of equipment may cause iatrogenic urinary tract infections.
• Closed urine collection systems are difficult to maintain in nonrecumbent patients.
