Small Intestine
Intussusception
Basic Information
Epidemiology
Associated Conditions and Disorders
• Enteritis: Segmental changes in motility
• Focal pedunculated mucosal masses such as a papilloma, leiomyoma, granuloma, or carcinoid may initiate the formation of an intussusception. In the author’s experience, mural leiomyomas have been commonly indentified.
• Other reported predisposing causes of small intestinal intussusceptions include transverse enterotomies, functional end-to-end anastomoses, and end-to-end anastomoses.
Clinical Presentation
History, Chief Complaint
• Clinical signs may be variable. Short intussusceptions causing incomplete obstruction may present with intermittent bouts of colic, particularly in the postprandial period; reduced appetite; reduced fecal production; weight loss; and a generalized unthriftiness. Affected horses may also experience intermittent fevers.
• Longer intussusceptions often cause complete obstruction and present with signs consistent with an acute small intestinal obstruction.
