Definition


Physical obstruction of the small colon caused by telescoping of the small colon into itself



Epidemiology



Species, Age, Sex


In the absence of rectal prolapse, seen rarely in foals and in broodmares



Clinical Presentation



History, Chief Complaint




• Colic


• Decreased fecal output


• Blood staining of feces


• Tympany, gas distension



Physical Exam Findings




• Temperature variable depending on severity of compromise


• Often tachycardic


• Sometimes depressed and lethargic


• Mucous membranes variable; most commonly injected and tacky


• Colic signs


• Abdominal distension and secondary ileus


• Decreased fecal output


• Variable hydration



Etiology and Pathophysiology


When small colon telescopes into itself, it can cause intraluminal obstruction as well as strangulation of mesenteric vessels.

Differential Diagnosis




• Small colon lipoma


• Small colon volvulus


• Small colon enterolith


• Small colon fecalith


• Small colon bezoar


• Small colon impaction


• Small colon phytoconglobate


• Small colon foreign body


• Small colon neoplasia



Initial Database




• Complete blood count: Leukopenia or leukocytosis common; occasionally normal


• Rectal examination
