Etiology and Pathophysiology
• It is unknown if polycystic kidney disease in horses is an inherited condition as seen in other species.
• Cystic lesions most likely are congenital and increase in size over time, resulting in compression of surrounding renal parenchyma and eventually leading to chronic renal failure.
