Definition

Exposure to organophosphates (OPs) that has resulted in pathology owing to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase

Exposure to fertilizers or insecticides

Associated Conditions and Disorders

• Bilateral rear limb paralysis

• Inability to fly

• Lacrimation

Clinical Presentation

Neurologic and muscle dysfunction

History, Chief Complaint

• May not have known history of exposure to compounds containing OPs

• Acute onset of neurologic signs (e.g., bilateral rear limb lameness) (see Neurologic Disease)

Physical Exam Findings

• Crop stasis

Etiology and Pathophysiology

OPs bind acetylcholinesterase permanently, resulting in excessive acetylcholine at the nerve endplates. This results in an inability of the bird to stop muscle activity, leading to clinical disease signs such as tremors and eventually paralysis.
