- Q. Why can’t I just rely on my vaporizer setting to tell me that my patient is at a good anesthetic plane?
- A. While the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of inhalant anesthetics provides some guideline as to where the vaporizer should be set to attain a surgical plane of anesthesia, many other factors influence how deep or light that patient may be. In general, all premedications will reduce inhalant anesthetic requirement, resulting in a substantial reduction in the required vaporizer setting.
