Epidemiology
Geography and Seasonality
• Buckeye: Six Aesculus spp. native to North America; small to large trees with large palmate leaves and distinctive brown fruits
• Carolina jessamine: Woody evergreen, perennial vines with trumpet-shaped yellow flowers
• Carolina allspice: Perennial, branching shrubs with opposite leaves and maroon-brown colored aromatic flowers of the southeastern states
• Golden chain tree: Perennial, deciduous, small trees with palmate, compound leaves, numerous pendulous inflorescences with pea-like yellow flowers and seed pods
• Scotch broom: A nonnative, perennial, shrub or small tree with ribbed branches, palmate leaves, and yellow pea-like flowers and seed pods
Clinical Presentation
Physical Exam Findings
• Buckeye: Incoordination, weakness, staggering gait, hypermetria, sawhorse stance, muscle spasms, gastroenteritis, colic
• Carolina jessamine: Incoordination, weakness, muscle convulsions, respiratory paralysis
• Carolina allspice: Muscle fasciculations, hypersensitivity, incoordination, recumbency, tetanic seizures, extensor rigidity
• Golden chain tree: Short-duration weakness, muscle tremors, incoordination, colic
