Etiology and Pathophysiology
• Squamous cell carcinoma is the most commonly reported neoplasm affecting the esophagus. In addition, extension of gastric squamous cell carcinoma into the distal esophagus may occur.
• In one reported case, squamous cell carcinoma developed within an esophageal diverticulum.
• Leiomyosarcoma has also been reported in association with gastric neoplasia.
• Exuberant granulation tissue in the esophagus without evidence of neoplasia has been reported in one horse.
