Microcytosis Basic Information Definition Microcytosis refers to the presence in the blood of significant numbers of erythrocytes that are smaller than normal (microcytes), often resulting in a decrease in the mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Microcytes may be mixed with cells of normal size on the blood smear, resulting in increased variation in erythrocyte size (anisocytosis).
