Microcytosis
Basic Information
Definition
Microcytosis refers to the presence in the blood of significant numbers of erythrocytes that are smaller than normal (microcytes), often resulting in a decrease in the mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Microcytes may be mixed with cells of normal size on the blood smear, resulting in increased variation in erythrocyte size (anisocytosis). Anemia associated with microcytosis may be referred to as microcytic anemia.
