Definition


Lipemia is the presence of excess fat (triglycerides) in the blood of a sufficient magnitude to impart a visible lactescent (milky) appearance to serum or plasma that does not resolve upon routine centrifugation. It is due to the presence in circulation of chylomicrons (CM) and/or excess very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles. It is characterized by hypertriglyceridemia, because CM and VLDL particles have a high triglyceride content. Serum or plasma samples with a triglyceride concentration of greater than 400 to 500 mg/dL (4.52–5.65 mmol/L) are likely to appear lipemic.



Synonym(s)


Lipidemia, hyperlipemia. Lipemia is sometimes used as a synonym for hyperlipidemia (synonym hyperlipoproteinemia), but the term is probably best reserved for those forms of hyperlipidemia/hyperlipoproteinemia that results in visible lactescence of serum and plasma.

Lipemia should not be evident in healthy horses, except perhaps following nursing in foals.
