Definition

Enzyme that breaks down triglycerides into monoglycerides and free fatty acids by hydrolyzing them

Physiology

Lipase is produced primarily in the pancreas, with a small amount produced by the gastric mucosa. It is a cytosolic enzyme that breaks down triglycerides into monoglycerides and free fatty acids. It is inactivated and excreted by the kidney. Lipase is considered a more sensitive indicator of pancreatic necrosis than amylase (fewer false negatives) but can be normal with pancreatitis.
