Large Colon
Intussusception
Basic Information
Clinical Presentation
Etiology and Pathophysiology
• As with other intussusceptions, hypermotility is believed to contribute to the development of colo-colic intussusceptions.
• Although not reported for colo-colic intussusceptions, it is possible that an intussusception may occur in association with an intramural mass at the leading edge of the intussusceptum.
• Colo-colic intussusceptions have been reported in the left ventral and dorsal colons and the pelvic flexure.
Diagnosis
Differential Diagnosis
• Other causes of mild to moderate abdominal pain: Simple or nonstrangulating obstructions of the gastrointestinal tract such as feed or sand impaction, enterolithiasis, large colon tympany, other large colon displacements, large intestinal intraluminal obstructions, small colon impactions, and ileal impactions
• Other causes of large intestinal distension on examination per rectum: Feed or sand impaction, enterolithiasis, large colon tympany, other large colon displacements, large colon volvulus, and other intraluminal obstructions
• Other causes of fever associated with recurrent mild colic: Peritonitis
• Other causes of colitis: salmonellosis and sand colitis or impaction
