Inflammatory Airway Disease
Basic Information
Definition
• Inflammatory airway disease (IAD) is a respiratory disease of adult horses that is characterized by noninfectious inflammation of the small airways accompanied by airway hyperreactivity.
• It is not yet clear whether IAD is entirely a particulate-induced inflammation or if there is an allergic component to this disease.
Clinical Presentation
Physical Exam Findings
• Affected animals are usually in good flesh.
• There is no evidence of increased respiratory effort at rest. The horse may have a mildly elevated respiratory rate, serous to mucoid nasal discharge, and cough or may have no distinct respiratory signs. Loud bronchovesicular sounds or mild wheezes and crackles on auscultation of the chest and mild fluid noises on auscultation of the trachea may be heard.
