Induction of parturition permits observation and professional assistance at the time of delivery. With proper preparation and assessment of fetal maturity, the goal of a smooth induction that mimics the mare’s natural process can be accomplished.



Indications


Mares requiring close supervision/assistance during foaling



• Ruptured prepubic tendon


• Pelvic fracture


• History of dystocia


• Premature placental separation


• Suspected or diagnosed twin pregnancy


• Neonatal isoerythrolysis


• Rupture/weakening of abdominal wall


• Prolonged gestation


• Near-term colic


• Uterine inertia


• Convenience/research or teaching purposes



Contraindications


Convenience for mare owner



Equipment, Anesthesia


Obstetric equipment: Lubricant, clean bucket, towels, obstetric chains and handles, gloves, oxygen and administration set, enema bucket, foal nasogastric tube, foal nasal catheter, tail wrap, nonirritating soap (eg, Ivory).



Anticipated Time


From 40 to 90 minutes



• Rupture of the chorioallantoic membrane will occur approximately 30 minutes after administration of oxytocin.


• Delivery of the foal will commence approximately 30 to 60 minutes after administration of oxytocin and will take roughly 20 to 30 minutes.


• Fetal membranes should be passed within 2 hours.
