Hypogammaglobulinemia, Transient
Basic Information
Definition
A syndrome characterized by the delayed onset of immunoglobulin synthesis in newborn foals
Clinical Presentation
Etiology and Pathophysiology
• At birth, foals are protected by maternal antibodies acquired through colostrum. These antibodies provide effective protection for 1 to 3 months, although their levels decline gradually.
• As maternal antibodies decline, the foal begins to make its own immunoglobulins. Under normal circumstances, the decline of maternal antibodies occurs at the same time as autologous antibody production begins, so there is no gap in protection.
• In transient hypogammaglobulinemia, there is a delay in autologous immunoglobulin synthesis, leaving the foal temporarily unprotected and susceptible to opportunistic bacterial infections.
Diagnosis
Initial Database
• Bacterial culture and sensitivity
• Serum immunoglobulin levels: At 2 to 4 months of age, all immunoglobulin classes and subclasses will be substantially below age-matched levels.
