History, Chief Complaint




• Swelling around the umbilicus: May be permanent or intermittent


• If a foal has an incarcerated, strangulated bowel, the foal will demonstrate inappetence, lethargy, and colic signs, and the hernia may have recently increased in size, becoming irreducible.



Physical Exam Findings




• Nonincarcerated hernia


image Soft, reducible hernia

image Most commonly normothermic

image Normal heart rate

image Normal mentation

image Mucous membranes pale pink and moist

image Normal borborygmi

image Normal fecal output

image Normal hydration

• Incarcerated or nonreducible hernia


image May be firm

image If painful and warm or edematous, often strangulated incarcerated hernia

image May demonstrate colic signs (definitely if strangulated)

image May demonstrate tachycardia (definitely if strangulated)

image May be normothermic but often hyperthermic or hypothermic depending on systemic status

image Often depressed and lethargic

image Mucous membranes variable: May be pale pink and moist but progress to toxic with time

image Often decreased or absent borborygmi

image Normal or decreased fecal output

• Depending on complete occlusion of bowel or partial involvement in the hernia (Richter’s hernia): Variable hydration
