Hernia, Incisional Basic Information Definition Protrusion of an organ or tissue through the ventral abdominal wall Synonym(s) • Ventral midline hernia • Ventral abdominal hernia Epidemiology Risk Factors • Ventral midline incisions such as for exploratory celiotomy or for umbilical herniorrhaphy Incisional infection Incisional trauma (especially in the recovery stall) Poor tissue viability Poor tissue apposition Clinical Presentation History, Chief Complaint Swelling and lack of normal definition of ventral abdominal midline Physical Exam Findings • Nonpainful, fluctuant swelling of ventral midline; may be one or multiple hernias and therefore swellings • Occasionally, incisional infection is still present characterized by discharge, heat, pain on palpation, and edema. • Horses are otherwise normally systemically stable. Normal heart rate, temperature, respiratory rate, and mucous membranes Normal mentation and appetite Audible borborygmi and normal fecal output Etiology and Pathophysiology Incisional hernias are associated with failure of normal healing of the linea alba.
