Overview and Goal(s)


Heel extensions are placed on the weight-bearing surface of the digit of neonatal foals to prevent hyperextension of the joints of the digit.



Indications




• Hyperextension of the joints of the digit


• Also supports weak flexor tendons in foals with hypoplastic tarsal bones, reducing compression dorsally



Contraindications


Should not be used in foals unless stall confined.



Equipment, Anesthesia




• Extensions can be made of many lightweight but strong materials including aluminium and fiberglass. The author prefers 4-inch triangular door hinges cut in half with the points bent up to form a 50-degree angle. The toe of the foot is glued in the angle.


• The extensions are applied to the hooves with polymethylmethacrylate or hoof adhesive products such as Equi-thane Adhere (Vettec Hoof care products).


• There are commercial shoes available for this purpose including Babi-cuff (Ibex, Farrier Supplies, West Midland, UK) shoes and Dalric cuffs (Nanric Inc., Lawrenceburg, KY).
