Overview and Goal

Emergency supportive care as used in mammals can be initiated while a history is being obtained and the prognosis discussed with the owners.

Indications

Animals often present at the end stage of a chronic disease process, and treatment may not be successful.

Contraindications

Animals that are obtunded, stuporous, or comatose have a grave prognosis, as do animals in cardiorespiratory arrest.

Equipment, Anesthesia

Basic emergency management of all cases may include appropriate thermal support, fluid support, oxygen administration, and a clean hospital tank.
