Overview and Goal(s)


To remove the affected tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the affected tooth by resection of the lateral alveolar plate and either extracting the entire tooth laterally or using this method to repulse the tooth into the oral cavity



Indications


Severe periapical infection, periodontal disease, and teeth fractured beyond repair that cannot be removed via the oral approach and have no chance of survival if left in place



Equipment, Anesthesia




• Perineural nerve blocks (dental blocks)


• General anesthesia


• Molar spreaders (various degrees of angulation)


• Radiographic guidance


• Anesthetic agent: Lidocaine 2%, Mepivacaine 2%, or Bupivacaine 0.75%

90 minutes



Preparation: Important Checkpoints




• Quality radiographs, oral examination, and advanced imaging computed tomography (CT) if necessary


• Ensure that exodontia remains the only means of controlling the problem and improving the quality of life.
