Etiology and Pathophysiology
• Congenital: Abnormal spacing or absence of adjacent dental buds; polyodontia or oligodontia; rotation or incorrect angulation of emerging teeth may also be a factor
• Acquired: Dental displacements, fractured crowns, and tooth loss; iatrogenic by premature removal of deciduous teeth
