• Diarrhea is an excess amount of water in the feces. Often the patient is dehydrated. Check cloacal area for staining, which often indicates a chronic problem. • Examine appearance and odor of feces because this might indicate nature of problem (anaerobic bacteria, blood). • Perform occult blood test on fecal material. • Make sure that presentation is not polyuria mixed with normal fecal deposit.
