Occlusal Equilibration
Basic Information
Overview and Goal(s)
• Eliminating or reducing factors contributing to abnormal occlusal wear and/or restrictions in normal masticatory biomechanics to eliminate pain, restore dental health, optimize masticatory function, and prolong the useful life of the dentition.
• A thorough knowledge of normal equine masticatory biomechanics is critical to successfully equilibrate equine dentition. These fundamentals are outside the scope of this text and are detailed elsewhere.
• Consider referral for any cases outside the operator’s expertise.
Indications
Every horse over the age of 18 months will benefit from occlusal equilibration at least once yearly.
Equipment, Anesthesia
Preparation: Important Checkpoints
• A thorough dental and health history should be obtained before treatment.
• A thorough oral examination should be performed prior to or in conjunction with the equilibration procedure.
• Allow adequate time for onset of full sedation effect before attempting treatment, usually at least 5 minutes.
