Synonym(s)




• Cutaneous biopsy, punch biopsy


• Excisional biopsies: Removal of the whole lesion


• Wedge biopsies: Full-thickness skin lesion is excised with a scalpel blade through the abnormal tissue to include a small rim of normal skin.


• Both excisional and wedge biopsies may provide more tissue to more accurately diagnose the underlying skin disease.


• Skin biopsies may also be used to obtain tissue for a macerated tissue culture.



Overview and Goal(s)


It is important to take multiple samples of skin lesions that reflect the spectrum of the skin disease present (old and new, severe and milder, centre of lesion versus periphery) and preserve for further processing at the laboratory.



Indications


Skin biopsies submitted for histopathologic examination can assist in making a diagnosis, confirming a clinical diagnosis or, at a minimum, ruling out certain diseases.



Equipment, Anesthesia


Disposable 6 and 8 mm diameter punch biopsies, No. 10 scalpel blade and handle, Brown-Adson thumb forceps, straight or curved iris scissors, suture material, container with 10% buffered formaldehyde, local anaesthesia (2% lidocaine, may add small amount of sodium bicarbonate to reduce the stinging of the lidocaine), possible sedation. General anaesthesia is usually not required.

10 to 30 minutes
