Etiology and Pathophysiology
• Obstruction of the biliary tract in a mature horse may be attributable to cholelithiasis, right dorsal colon displacement, neoplasia, hepatic torsion, or portal vein thrombosis. Duodenal stricture in foals may be secondary to duodenal ulceration.
• Acute biliary obstruction causes cholestasis, biliary distension, and variable pain.
• Chronic biliary obstruction results in hepatic fibrosis, originating around the obstructed biliary branch(es).
