Baermann Test
Basic Information
Typical Normal Range (US and IU units)
Results are reported as positive or negative for larvae often with a genus identification.
Physiology
This test is based upon the active migration of larvae out of feces when warm water is added. The feces, contained within gauze, are placed in a funnel, which is connected to a short length of tubing that has a clamp at the end. After warm water is added to the funnel, the larvae migrate into the water and sink to the bottom of the tubing, where they are collected after several hours and then microscopically identified.
