Draining Tract from Jaw

Basic Information

Overview and Goal(s)

Percutaneous sampling technique for the determination of etiologic organisms in maxillary and mandibular draining wounds.

Indications

Swellings on the mandible or maxilla, from which there is drainage of serous, mucoid, mucopurulent, or purulent debris.

Contraindications

Little is to be gained by “swabbing” this region after prolonged antimicrobial therapy.

Equipment, Anesthesia

• Sedation: Local anesthesia or perineural analgesia (if required)

• Antiseptic scrub and isopropyl alcohol

• Sterile gloves

• Sterile transport swabs (aerobic and anaerobic)

• Blood culture medium

• 3-mL syringes and 20-gauge 1-inch needles
