Overview and Goal(s)

• The semen is deposited onto the oviductal papilla of the ipsilateral horn on the side of the preovulatory follicle using an endoscope.

• This technique allows the visualization of the oviductal papilla.

• Although it may give better results when the insemination dose is close to the oviductal sperm reservoir capacity, it requires two assistants and it is more time-consuming.

Indications

• Breeding with a very low dose (<5.0 × 10⁶ progressively motile sperm) and very small volume (<20–500 µL) of semen from a subfertile, booked, or old stallion, or using sex-sorted semen

• When the insemination dose is close to the oviductal sperm reservoir capacity

Equipment

• Sedation: Combination of detomidine-butorphanol

• Sterilized and prewarmed (37° C) endoscope (at least 1.2 m long) with inner insemination catheter
