Overview and Goal(s)


Aseptic technique and anatomic landmarks are used to access a joint, bursa, or synovial sheath and sample synovial fluid and/or inject appropriate medications.



Indications


Sampling the synovial space is necessary to rule in or rule out sepsis. Treatment of a joint or synovial space may be necessary to treat sepsis, osteoarthritis, or traumatic synovitis.



Contraindications


The needle should not be placed through an area of cellulitis or infection.



Equipment, Anesthesia




• The horse is sedated with medications that also provide analgesia such as a combination of detomidine and butorphanol.


• A standard aseptic surgical preparation of the injection site will be required.


• Sterile gloves, sterile 18- to 20-g, 1- to 1.5-inch needles, several 6-mL sterile syringes, sampling tubes (usually EDTA, heparin, and plain Vacutainer tubes, and culture transport media) and any appropriate joint medications.
