Overview and Goal

In cases of severe upper airway obstruction, such as tracheal aspergillosis or a tracheal foreign body, it becomes necessary to provide an alternate route for ventilation by means of an air sac cannula. Surgical access to the head and neck is easier after placement of an air sac cannula for general anesthesia. Direct application of antimicrobials or nebulization of drugs may be performed through the air sac cannula.

Indications

• Severe upper airway obstruction

• Surgical access to the head and neck

• Direct instillation of respiratory therapeutics

Contraindications

Severe pneumonia or severe air sacculitis

Equipment, Anesthesia

The bird should be mask-induced with inhalant anesthesia, although placement may be performed without anesthesia in extreme emergencies.
