7 Abnormal urine or urination A number of different terms are in use clinically to describe signs exhibited by animals with abnormal urine or urination and the following is the author’s interpretation of these terms: • Dysuria: painful urination • Stranguria: straining to urinate (usually painful) • Pollakiuria: passing small amounts of urine frequently (spotting) • Macroscopic (gross, frank) haematuria: bloody urine (red blood cells) • Pigmenturia: grossly discoloured urine • Periuria: urination in inappropriate location • Urinary incontinence: involuntary (unintentional) leakage of urine. Dysuria, Stranguria and Pollakiuria Dysuria, stranguria and pollakiuria are often seen in combination and are a relatively common cluster of signs in emergency patients, especially cats.
