DEFINITION/OVERVIEW



  • An uninhibited, excessive immune inflammatory response affecting the oral cavity in cats
  • Marked caudal mucositis extending into submucosal tissues (Fig. 50-1)

c50uf003ETIOLOGY/PATHOPHYSIOLOGY



  • Cause unknown; bacterial, viral (calici virus), and immunologic etiologies (bacterial persistence) suspected
  • Significant findings of feline coronavirus in one study
  • Immunosuppression from feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) can also lead to nonresponsive infections; most affected cats are negative for FeLV and FIV
